Most Excellent Indeed

This past Friday CJ and I went out to Virginia to have promotional photos taken. The shots came out very well. A few of the better shots are available online at the photographer’s website.

Portrait

Over the weekend I was in New York catching up with a few old friends and gorging myself with some of the incomparable food the city has to offer:

  • New York Popover - Manhattan
  • Mardi Gras - Queens
  • Katz’s Delicatessen - Manhattan
  • The Excellent Dumpling House - Manhattan

The dumpling place really lives up to it’s name. My good friend Phil took me there five years ago during my first trip to the Big Apple and I’ve eaten there on just about every visit since then.

It’s all about the scallion pancakes.

You Reap What You Sow

It looks like Dooce has decided to call it quits and stop posting to her site. You may remember that she was pink-slipped several months back because of her blog.

After reading her sign-off message, I’ve decided she needs to dip into the clue-bag. Here are a few choice morsels:

…this website has caused more damage and sorrow to my personal life than it has good.

I don’t think so. You have caused any and all sorrow and damage to your own personal life. Your website did no such thing. What are you, an animist or something? You made a conscious decision to publish things that hurt the people around you. Are you surprised by the results?

I’d love to be able to sit here and say that artistic expression and freedom are worth all the damage they have wreaked on the personal relationships I have with family, friends, neighbors and employers, but I cannot and will not.

First you blamed your website. Now you’re blaming “artistic expression and freedom. ” Why the hell not? There’s plenty of blame to go around, since you’re obviously not going to accept any.

The people in my life just aren’t ready for it.

Now it’s their fault? Okay, lets make a list. You’ve managed to blame:

  • your website
  • artistic expression
  • freedom
  • the people in your life

Let’s remember the importance of personal accountability, folks.

Dreams Die

I just watched Startup.com on DVD. It was like watching a 103 minute train wreck. Thank God I didn’t get sucked into working for a dotcom after college.

Are You Being Served?

I went to Sweet Georgia Brown’s with the little lady last night. Despite the obnoxious Connie Morella fundraiser in progress near our table, it was a decidedly enjoyable meal.

Despite his well dressed appearance, our waiter looked like he belonged working security at a Grand Funk Railroad concert. He was very tall and his long gray hair was pulled in a ponytail. His face was covered with a thick gray beard.

In point of fact, he was an exceptionally good waiter. Living in the District makes you lower the bar on your expectation of the quality of service you will receive just about anywhere. Every once in a while, it’s still nice when someone surprises you.

Six of One, Half Dozen of the Other

During my lunch today I ran over to Reiters, a bookstore specializing in technical and trade books over near the GWU campus. I picked up two O’Reilly computer books (Learning the VI Editor and Web Database Applications with PHP and MySQL).

Upon checkout I was enrolled in the new “Team O’Reilly Rewards Program.” They gave me a card and I get it stamped with an imprint of a crack-addict lemur for every O’Reilly book I buy. Every time I get five of the little rascals they give me a free O’Reilly book under $50.

I was very pleased by the new promotion, until I remembered I used to get 20% off each O’Reilly book I bought at Reiters.

Too Much of a Good Thing

For times when that Audi TT just isn’t cool enough: the new Bugatti EB 16-4 Veyron. My only complaint is the two-tone finish. It would definitely look much better in silver.

Newgrass at 9:30

Erin, Jen Bruce, and I went to see Nickel Creek at the 9:30 club tonight. Needless to say, it was an absolutely amazing show and the place was packed.

Highlights included “The House of Tom Bombadil” with a verse from Nirvana’s “Lithium”, a few songs from their new album, and a encore rendition of “The Fox” peppered with an Eminem-paced rendition of Bob Dylan’s “Subterreanean Homesick Blues.”

I would have like to have heard “The Hand Song” but what can you do?

Better Than Church Bingo

Long Bets lets people place wagers on “societally or scientifically important” issues (with all proceeds going to charity).

It’s basically in the same vein as the famous commodity price bet between Paul Ehrich and Julian Simon.

Rural Life in DC

The DC Tax form for filing an income tax extension (Form FR-127) actually has a line that asks you to enter your “Number and Street or Rural Route.”

Can someone tell me where the rural routes are here in the District of Columbia?

From Angela

Just posting a great photo Angela took before the wedding last November. She walked right into the bathroom while I was brushing my teeth and snapped a shot off of the mirror. My little sister Katie was adjusting her hair at the time. And there you have all three of us together.

Protesters Exploit Live TV

Yesterday I went to see David Boaz on Crossfire over at the new GWU auditorium where it’s being filmed. He was on the second panel, along with a woman from HRC. They debated hate crime laws.

During the middle of the live show about 20 men who did not appear to be students stood up and started blowing whistles. They then began shouting “GWU exploits workers.” The show immediately cut to a commercial and the protesters began to leave the auditorium. Tucker had a bit of an “exchange” with them as they were leaving.

This is why you shouldn’t film a live national news program at a university. It gives every whacko the possibility of national exposure. And they will take advantage of it.

Movin’ On Up

I migrated from Blogger to Movable Type 2.0 today. The archiving issues were really starting to get to me and I finally cracked. The upgrade went smoothly. I still need to tweak a few templates and create some redirects.

So now there’s a comments system. Knock yourself out.

Shifting Urban Demographics

So I went to Ben’s Chili Bowl last night with the little lady. As I walked through the door, I immediately knew something wasn’t exactly right. Several observations:

  • There are an unusual number of my fellow caucasians here.
  • Most of them are female and quite angry looking.
  • They seem to be here in “pairs.”

So I decide to ask one of them if there’s something going on in U Street. Ani Difranco concert at 9:30. Should have figured.

Not Exactly Satyagraha

Erin and I were in North Carolina over the weekend. We drove by the Redhat building in Raleigh. As we pulled by the front entrance we saw the following quote emblazoned on the wall:

“First, they ignore you.
Then they laugh at you.

Then they fight you.

Then you win.” -Ghandi

Talk about a corporate culture built on an underdog mentality.

A Sucker Born Every Minute

When it comes to nicotine delivery systems, it’s not the cigarette companies we should be worrying about.
