One Stop Blogging

I just downloaded NetNewsWire Pro 1.0b4 and it seems I can now post from inside my newsreader. It will be great to have a one-stop shopping application for all my weblog needs. Definitely a cool idea from Ranchero Software.

Stating the Obvious

A metaphor for the intelligence of the users of different operating systems, as dictated by the FAQ page for the new live Phish MP3 & SHN download service:

What are the recommended specs for enjoying Live Phish Downloads?

Windows Windows 98SE, 2000, ME, XP, or later 128 MB RAM 10 GB Hard Drive (a larger hard drive is optimal) Pentium III 750MHz or faster (or equivalent) Cable Modem or DSL Internet Explorer 5.5 or later

Mac OS Mac OS 9.1 or later 128 MB RAM 10GB Hard Drive (a larger hard drive is optimal) Cable Modem or DSL Internet Explorer 5 or later

Unix You probably don’t need our advice. (emphasis mine).

I think [this][1] wins the award for the creepient use of Flash this year. [1]: http://www.alterfin.com/dominique/index.html

Politics of Childhood

I don’t think I’ve heard anyone mention the fact that Trent Lott was 7 years old when Strom Thurmond ran for president.

Perhaps Lott made his remarks with no real specific recollection of Thurmond’s 1948 platform. He may actually be a racist, but do you think he’s stupid enough to have proclaim that America would be better off had the segregationist won?

Would you expect him to publicly proclaim his ignorance as a defense? Hell no. He’s towing the “poor choice of words” line just as one might expect.

Lessig’s Baby

Creative Commons launched their Licensing Project today, which now allows copyright holders to share their works while clearly and easily indicating specific use and attribution requirements.

It will be interesting to see if the open-source community embraces these licenses for software. Will the new licenses end up replacing the GPL and Berkeley licenses we’ve come to know and love? I’m willing to bet the new licenses will be more popular with artists, musicians, and writers, primarily because the Creative Commons seems to be marketing itself more directly to those groups.

TiVo Series 2 Upgrades

It looks like us Series 2 TiVo owners will soon be receiving a software upgrade that will enable some cool new functions on our existing hardware:

  1. MP3 playback
  2. photo album/slideshow mode
  3. remote web access

I feel like I bought a refrigerator three months ago and now it’s going to magically become a refrigerator, oven, microwave and dishwasher.

I love TiVo.

You may notice the hyper-minimalist redesign. It’s a default Movable Type installation with virtually no modifications, save a customized stylesheet. I wanted to implement the new search engine feature that’s available in version 2.5 of MT and I didn’t want to screw around with my design template includes. I’m lazy. It’s not worth the hassle every time the Trott’s roll-out a new version with features I’d like to implement. From now on I’ll be doing the default thing and I’ll let stylesheets take care of everything else.

One-Click Propaganda Shopping

It looks like Al Qaeda isn’t the only bad boy with a Cafepress online shop. The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea has gotten into the game too.

The Agora

This online bartering community could be the next big thing. I’ll think I’ll have to sign up and see how it works.

Hmmm. What are my three crapiest CDs?

Miracle on 34th Street

So David McCreery decided to send a letter to Santa via Federal Express and he was thoughtful enough to include a link so we could track the delivery route online.

Looks like Santa has relocated to Basalt, Colorado.
