DVD Playback on Red Hat 9.0
I finally managed to get DVD playback working on my Linux workstation, which is running Red Hat 9.0, by installing the following RPMs (which you should be able to find online) in order:
- libdvdcss-1.2.6-fr2.i386.rpm
- libdvdread-0.9.4-fr3.i386.rpm
- alsa-lib-0.9.3-fr2.i386.rpm
- ogle-0.9.1-fr3.i386.rpm
- ogle_gui-0.9.1-fr2.i386.rpm
I also had to set the display color depth to 16-bit (down from 24-bit) to get it working properly. Typing “ogle” at the command line should bring up the application. Assuming your installation went well, everything should be self-explanatory from there.
The Frosty Mug News Aggregator
I installed a couple of Movable Type plugins (mt-list and mt-rssfeed) to allow me to setup a blogroll page displaying the last five posts for each MT blog I’m hosting on this server.
The page is here if you’re interested. It updates itself four times a day. If it ends up being useful, I might decide to make it a bit more interactive.
Differentiation of Desserts
I’ve decided that flan is basically crème brûlée without the fun.
First A Rap Album, Now This
Yes, that was actually Cornel West appearing as a Zion Elder in The Matrix Reloaded. I sincerely wonder what his colleagues at Princeton are saying about his new film career.
For Software That Rapes Your Computer
It seems that Lavasoft has a new slogan for Ad-aware, their award winning anti-spyware program:
“Ad-aware: The Morning After Pill for the Internet”
I love it. It’s witty and offensive to the papist contingent.
Downloading Steinways
I came across a wonderfully sampled free soundfont file of a ninety-five year-old Steinway this past week and I decided to render new audio files from some old electronic music compositions I did in college.
Here’s an MP3 of “Untitled #3” (2.9 MB) for your listening pleasure–or displeasure as the case may be.
Finger Lickin’ Good
I saw The Matrix Reloaded yesterday night. Did anyone else think “The Architect” looked suspiciously like Colonel Sanders?
Victory Without Surrender
I was wondering how Bush would declare victory in the absence of a formal surrender from Iraq. Yesterday, he chose to do so from the hull of an aircraft carrier. It was a brilliantly executed PR stunt.
I also enjoyed seeing the photos of him in flight gear with the other pilots. He seemed to fit right in.
